The Twelve Principal Stained Glass Windows of the Basilica of Saint Mary

A bit of history…
To the best of our understanding, when this church was built (1854-1864) the parish intended to raise funds in the future to commission and install beautiful stained glass windows, so in the beginning very basic colored glass windows were installed. The time for the stained glass window project didn’t come until the first part of the 20th century and we don’t know much about how it all came to be.

We know the windows were crafted in Germany and we have good reason to believe they were done by Franz Mayer of Munich. Our records indicate each of the 12 main windows cost $450.00. They were installed in the church in 1916. Across their lifetime, they have been checked and watched to be proactive in any maintenance and care.

At present, the parish is looking in the near future to having them cleaned, and the outer storm glass replaced.

The Nave
Below can be found images of the twelve windows that recount the life of Jesus and Mary in Salvation History. You “read” the windows from the front left / Mary’s Shrine side to right / Joseph’s Shrine side, back and forth moving down the nave to the back of the church.
