These are the antiphons the accompany the Magnificat canticle of Evening Prayer in the praying of the Liturgy of the Hours from December 17 – 23. They are a magnificent theology that uses the ancient biblical imagery drawn from the messianic hopes of God’s People recorded in the Old Testament, to proclaim the coming Christ as the fulfillment not only of Old Testament hopes, but of our present ones as well. Just as the liturgical season of Advent aides us to open ourselves fully and anew to the Lord’s coming, not only in the liturgical commemoration of His Birth, but also since He will return again, these antiphons with their repeated use of the imperative, “Come!” embodies the longing of all the for the Divine Messiah. We see a paraphrase of these in the hymn O Come, O Come, Emmanuel which arose in the 18th century.

17 December – Sapientia (Wisdom):
Isaiah had prophesied, “The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord, and his delight shall be the fear of the Lord.” (11:2-3), and “Wonderful is His counsel and great is His wisdom.” (28:29).

Pray: “O Wisdom, O holy Word of God, you govern all creation with your strong yet tender care.
