The Season of Christmas<\/h3>\n

After Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord, celebrating the Nativity of the Lord the second most important liturgical celebration in the Church’s liturgical life. The culmination of the great mystery of the Incarnation, that is, the Nativity, highlights the reality that God has become man, has entered flesh. “Because of this belief, God is not only Transcendent, but also wholly Immanent, Emmanuel (God-with-us). While remaining Transcendent (meaning we must rise above our present condition to reach Him), He is at the same time Immanent (meaning He is with us as we rise toward Him). Every Eucharist is like Christmas where the bread and wine are transformed into His flesh, His Body and Blood, and, in a sense, He is born anew on the altar” (usccb.org<\/a>). Just as Mother Church gives us the 4 weeks of Advent to prepare for the Lord’s Nativity, she calls her children to children to celebrate and bask in this great mystery not just for Christmas day, but for a Christmas Octave culminating in the great solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, and beyond that for the Christmas Season until at least the Baptism of the Lord.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

During this Season of Christmas then, let us keep the words of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI on our minds and hearts to truly live in and radiate the mystery of the Incarnation and Nativity:<\/span><\/div>\n

“Joy is the true gift of Christmas, not expensive presents that demand time and money.\u00a0We can transmit this joy simply: with a smile, with a kind gesture, with some small help, with forgiveness. Let us give this joy and the joy given will be returned to us. Let us seek in particular to communicate the deepest joy, that of knowing God in Christ. The Church’s liturgical year, as recalled by the Second Vatican Council in the constitution on the sacred liturgy,\u00a0Sacrosanctum Concilium<\/em>, notes:\u00a0<\/span>“Holy Church celebrates the saving work of Christ on prescribed days in the course of the year with sacred remembrance. Each week, on the day called the Lord’s Day, she commemorates the Resurrection of the Lord, which she also celebrates once a year in the great Paschal Solemnity, together with his blessed Passion. In fact, throughout the course of the year the Church unfolds the entire mystery of Christ and observes the birthdays of the Saints.” <\/span><\/div>\n

With the conclusion of the Christmas Season (during which, we recalled the nativity of Jesus and His manifestation to the people of the world), the Church now enters the first period of Ordinary Time in the liturgical year during which the Christian faithful are called to growth, conversion, and maturation by considering the fullness of the Revelation of God incarnate in Jesus with His life, teachings\/words, and works\/deeds. Each day of ordinary time, the Church calls Christians, to live His mystery and life in their own lives. And, while moving through this period of ordered time, the church invites us to stop on some special days to commemorate major events in the Lord’s life and ministry, the memorials of canonized saints, and the life of Mary, the blessed Virgin, Mother of God and Mother of the Church. As the US Conference of Bishops reflects on the liturgical year on their website, regarding the call to live Jesus’ mystery in our own lives: “This call is best illustrated in the lives of Mary and the saints, celebrated by the Church throughout the year. There is no tension between the mystery of Christ and the celebration of the saints, but rather a marvelous harmony. The Blessed Virgin Mary is joined by an inseparable bond to the saving work of her Son, and the feasts of all the saints proclaim the wonderful works of Christ in his servants and offer the faithful fitting examples for their imitation.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
